Resource Description

Historical Wood Use(Resource ID: 121)

Wood is one of the most important renewable (and therefore sustainably useful) resources. In the past varieties of timber were selected according to their characteristics. This field trip shows the breadth of timber varieties, how the entire tree was used, and the cyclical management of forests/timber in the past.

The goal of this building block is to point out the historical usage of timber and what can be learned from it. This touches on topics such as cyclical management, expected useful life, uses of trees (entire tree utilization), waste-free construction, usage today and reintroducing unused timber varieties to increase sustainability, etc.

This building block is designed as a field trip. In addition to preliminary information in form of a PowerPoint presentation, a description of the field trip (including explanatory visual aids) and wrap-up session (also possible at the end of the field trip) are also available.
