Qualitative location analysis(Resource ID: 17)

The building block “Qualitative location analysis“ demonstrates qualitative relations between locations and humans. If the properties or the characteristics of a specific area or building in terms of local resources are important, the qualitative method is well suited for the analysis. The building block is a catalog full of ideas that you can flip through to get inspiration and new ideas for your courses - the point is to find a way to approach people in specific locations. Scientists have to find what works best for them. Some parts of the building block can be printed out, so that you can take them with you to the field work. You can combine the two building blocks “Qualitative location analysis“ and “Methods of qualitative spacial analysis“.

The first part of this building block consists of local peculiarities and characteristics of locations. The second part deals with spatial biographies, operational and organizational research. The third part is about changes of situations and the fourth part about local resources. You do not have to read the building block from top to bottom, you can also select specific sections that are of interest to you. We suggest that you start with the parts that are most relevant to you.

The title “Qualitative location analysis“ means that basic knowledge on specific research areas is analyzed in terms of local qualities and characteristics or properties of a location as resources.

First of all, the students should visit the location they want to analyze, talk to the people and learn as much as they can about them and the place to define the properties and the characteristics of the location. The students should also write a report.

Then they should talk to representatives of the location before speaking with passers-by, employees or general 'users' of the location.

The students should focus on situations of change when talking to the people as for example the changing of professions, quitting the job, moving to another location, sickness or economic setbacks due to global changes, etc. The strategies employed because of these situations of change can be defined as local resources which are also relevant for future decision.

This building block can be combined with the building block "Methods for a qualitative spatial analysis".

Learning Outcomes
The students learn to categorize their own perceptions in terms of specific locations. They learn to understand social adjustments to situations and recognize different types of local resources.
Relevance for Sustainability
The Building block takes available spacial properties and local qualities into account. Scientists are in the field and personally involved in the research topic.
