The Socratic dialogue helps individual participants to gain general insights through reflection on concrete experience. It is a platonic moment. It is about thinking together and building on each other’s ideas. One usually agrees on a question which most participants find interesting. Central to Socratic dialogue is the search for meaning beyond the purely subjective, to strive for valid inter-subjective statements, for truth. The process of winning insights through reflection on experience is determined by the structure of the reasoning capacity of the participants, which is the pre-condition for an inductive conclusion.
In the Socratic Dialogue, it is the facilitator’s pedagogical task to ensure that all considerations are taken into account, to foster argumentation skills and to steer the dialogue in fruitful directions, so that all participants are involved.
Students practice how to deal with informal fallacies, giving reasons, examples and counterexamples, offering and examining propositions, hypotheses or explanations and learn to know different perspectives and different ways of thinking.
The module offers stimulus material for a philosophical dialogue, for example literature, pictures, music and films.
One aim is to promote reflective skills, mutual understanding and finally to develop a „community of inquiry“. You can find exercises, discussion plans and activities which can be used differently related to the philosophical dialogue as well as power point presentation and worksheets to every module.
