Raising Awareness for Energy Use Practices Among Students(Resource ID: 271)

This resource aims to raise awareness amongst students of energy conumption practices and energy efficiency. The resource uses three main methods to engage students: Interaction with stakeholders, energy consumption measurement (footprint) and video production of student presentations. Energy efficiency is a topic linked to three sustainability pillars: Economy, Environment and Soceity. In Economy, energy efficiency measures energy costs for private households and how to reduce poverty. In relation to the environment, energy efficiency leads to a more balanced use of natural resources and less contamination. Energy Consumption is directly linked to society practices and awareness. Students will work in groups of approximately 4. Students will monitor an individual household/residential activities and the household equipment, monitoring their related energy consumption for one week. Using the calculation methodology provided by the Kosovo Electricity Distribution and Supply Company( KEDS) each individual will calculate household/residence energy costs. After the individual work is done the group will analyze common trends and differences and will propose energy efficiency and conservation measures. The groups will prepare a film presentation of not more than 10 minutes together with a PPT focusing on the impact of energy use, the conservation of valuable resources and how students could influence their behaviour at home and in the community. Students will post the video on YouTube.

The price of our energy bills is increasing every year. The 2011 INDEP report revealed that an average Kosovan family spends 1, 210 euro for energy bills a year, or referring to the Kosovo Statistical Office, around  30% of the average family expenses (INDEP, 2011). While we are worried about the money we spend to pay our bills, we are not aware of our consumption practices and how they affect the environment. The purpose of this assignment is to raise awareness of energy consumption practices and energy efficiency and conservation measures.The resource uses three main methods to engage students: Interaction with stakeholders, energy consumption measurement (footprint) and video production of student presentations.

For the purpose of this assignment you will discuss with a guest speake from the Institute for Development Policies (INDEP) a member of Kosovo Civil Society Consortium for Sustainable Development (KOSID). Kosovo Electricity Distribution and Supply Company(KEDS will present how energy consumption is calculated and billed. INDEP will discuss Energy Efficiency Factors and the measures households can take to reduce energy consumption.

For one week each student in the group will monitor individual household/residence activities and the household equipment and their related energy consumption. Using the calculation methodology provided by KEDS each individual will calculate household/residence energy costs. After the individual work is done the group will analyze common trends and differences and will propose energy efficiency and conservation measures.

Students will need time to work as a group to design and deliver the presentation. Students will record the presentation following the guidelines how to upload the presentation onto youtube.

The efficient use of energy within your homes can include suggestions for how energy consumption could be reduced. Your presentation may centre on the impact of energy use, the conservation of valuable resources and how you could influence your behaviour at home and in your community.

This Teaching Resource requires 1 session in class of 2:30 hours. It involves two presentations with discussions, a short break of 10 minutes and the assignment brief (approx. 3 lecture units). This does not calculate the individual work of students in the assignment, which is 2 weeks monitoring, and 2 weeks planning and doing the presentation.

Evaluation Criteria:
To achieve a ‘Pass’ grade
The work will achieve learning outcome 1. The work submitted will provide film of the presentation and copies of the presentation slides and accompanying notes with a maximum of 8 slides. The group will demonstrate that some limited wider reading and research has been undertaken and that the group has considered and adapted the presentation for the target audience. There will be evidence of the limited use of research and little creative content. Adequate oral communication skills evident, using a limited range of techniques and technology.

To achieve a ‘Distinction’ grade
As above, however higher level answers will provide additional evidence of wider reading and research on the topic selected. Slides for the presentation will clearly be targeted at the audience required in the question. Excellent use of graphics evident, with clear delivery of the presentation, both demonstrating outstanding creative, visual and oral communication skills.

Requirements for the visual and oral assessment:

1. Students will work in groups of approximately 4. Students will form their own groups and provide the module leader with members of their group and the group name.
2. Each group will prepare and film a presentation including providing paper copies of slides and notes.
3. Paper copies of the presentation will be submitted by January the assigned date at 10:00 am to Administration (Details - see Assignment Brief).
4. Each group will film the presentation and upload this to the website by assigned date. The presentation film should last approximately 10 minutes. Where the film runs over and reaches 15 minutes, after this point the presentation will not be marked. Additional marks will be given for keeping to the 10 minutes time slot. Marks may also be deducted for those presentations that finish too early and hence have limited content.
5. There will be a maximum of 8 slides in the presentation.
6. A presentation marking sheet is attached to this assessment along with a marking guide.
Credit/Certification Description
This resource may be given as presentation assignment. Student will receive the credits according to the weighting for this element in the module.
