Corporate social responsibility and sustainable development: The case of cement companies operating in the harbour of Durrës.(Resource ID: 284)

This teaching material focus is on social responsibility of the export-import cement companies that operate in Durrës harbour. The need for this teaching resource derives from the need for active learning and knowledge sharing in relation to social, economic and environmental challenges for sustainable development. The topic discussed in the teaching material is that of the responsibility of the companies that operate in the harbour of Durrës, as the biggest and main port of the country, where all the major imports-exports of the country take place. The sustainability challenge here is in relation to business activities not in accordance with governmental or institutional regulation. This raises issues of informality in business operations, environmental pollution, and health issues.

The teaching resource will require approximately 10 lecture units.

There are several export/import cement companies that operate in the port of Durrës. These companies should operate in respect of all the legal and environmental regulations when they do their business activities. Thus, the teaching material focus is on the corporates social responsibility and specifically the companies that operate in the port of Durrës.

The problem and the challenge involved here in relation to sustainable development is that some of these companies are not complying with regulations and laws, mainly for reasons of minimizing the outlays or cutting the operation costs. The results of these daily activities has negative effects on the environment and the community that resides in Durrës (especially the families living in the quarters around the port). Therefore, it is very important to organize meetings with all the interested parties and relevant stakeholders about the importance of safe and eco-friendly business activities of the companies that export/import in the port of Durrës. In this context, a careful study about corporate social responsibility of the companies that operate in the mining industry will be helpful to identify best practices and serve as a model for other companies. In addition, this teaching resource aims to measure the citizens’ perceptions of air pollution and health issues.

Therefore, the relevant stakeholders identified in this case are the municipality of Durrës, the Port Authority of Durrës, the National Environmental Agency, and the citizens affected by this problem.

The students perspective will be derived by forming different groups to analyze and think critically about this sustainable development challenge and by proposing different solutions to it.

This also will be very helpful for tourism, because the city of Durrës is one Albania’s most important tourtist attractions.

Integration of Social Stakeholders
Business companies are involved in the seminar as active partners – students have the possibility to get in direct contact with businesses and may experience challenges in implementing sustainability management. The stakeholders from the businesses benefit from the collaboration, as well as they receive external, fresh and creative perspectives on their activities from the students and recommendations about their sustainability management processes. In this context some of the most important stakeholders can be:
- National Environmental Agency, with its regional branch in Durrës.
- Municipality of Durrës.
- The Port Authority of Durres
- Cement companies.
- Inhabitants of the neighborhoods around the harbour.

Learning Outcomes
A number of learning targets are included in the teaching resource:
- To review and discuss daily business operations with the cement companies.
- Giving students a view of the current situation regarding the corporate responsibility of the firms operating in the harbour of Durres.
–To analyze the point of view of the citizens by means of questionnaires about environmental public policies and sustainability.

They should provide operating data and information, and must be open for cooperation with lecturers and students. Assessment
The assessment of the students will be based on the course syllabus and part of the grading system. That means that the students will be graded for their course assignment with a maximum of 100 points out of a total of 1000 points.
