Technological aspects of potato cultivation in Kosova(Resource ID: 324)

x Please note: module with excess length - more than
7 lecture units required!
The main purpose of this project is to research 11 kinds of potatoes during vegetation. The exploration is undertaken in agro-climatic regions of Kosovo, Agricultural Institute of Kosovo, farms in Peja -Rrafshi i Dukagjinit who are the stakeholders. The 11 kinds of potato included are aimed at fresh consumption and industrial elaboration. The students will learn about planting during the vegetative period of cultivars and the yield on the day of harvest, as well as learning how to determine the dry matter.

The study came as the result of a test in the Agricultural Institute of Kosovo, where the best cultivars were chosen as far as the production and other vital parameters are concerned.

1.       Improvement of potato cultivation technology

  1. Implementation of the cultivars of special interest for the agro-climatic and production conditions in Kosovo.
  2. Regarding their compatibility for consumption and further elaboration and their resistance to the harming factors.

The influence of P, K in production and some qualitative parameters of potato.

This study aims not only at the evaluation of potato cultivars in general, but also at the identification of all the indicators of a cultivar in particular and in a detailed way, based on the experience of developed countries with high production rates in this fields, such as Netherlands, Germany, France, etc. Through the study and specialised literature the evaluation and the relation between them is undertaken.

Based on the resistance of the cultivars to various illnesses, the elimination of the pesticides is done. This leans towards the organic, agriculture perspective and the possibility of increasing the potato cultivation in our country.

The identification of the vegetation periods, the shape, the skin colour, the pulp, and many positive indicators open ahead new perspectives.

The study of the dry material content enabled the division and compatibility of the cultivars for consumption and industrial elaboration. .

Another aspect of the study is the evaluation of the cultivars regarding the indicators mentioned above for a three year period which provides the stability of the production indicators influenced by the climatic factors and this is based on statistical data.

  1. 1.       Materials and method

The field observations are carried out in two agro-ecologic regions of Kosovo:

  1. In Arbnesh, in the farm of the Agricultural Institution of Kosovo in Pejë (Rrafshi i Dukagjinit) and
  2. In Pestovë  (Rrafshi i Kosovës).

There are included 11 potato cultivars for fresh consumption and industrial elaboration : Sinora, Faluka, Ambition, Arnova, Zafira, Exelent, Mantiou, Rudolph, Marlen, Ambasador and Kondor. The seed was of high quality, A class, imported from Netherlands (AGRICO). The fields were planted in four repeated tiers according to the plan system   (PPRB) in block, with 4 rows for each cultivar. The surface of each plot of land is 12m2 , while for the variant is 48m2.

The main digging was done in Autumn 2010, while the exploitation of the surfaces was done in Spring 2011. Pre-culture in Pestovë used to be the corn and in Pejë, the wheat. The fundamental fertilizing was done with fertilizers, type NPK, ( 15:15:15), in Spring with 1000 kg/ha. The planting was done manually: 21 – 22.04. 2011  Pestovë, Pejë.

The re-fertilisation is done during the pre-flourishing with NAG (27%N) and quantity 200 kg/ha. The extraction was done on 01.10.2011in Peje, respectively on 26.10.2011 në Pestovë.

Herbicides that were used : Glifosat (in autumn total herbicide), Senkor 1kg/ha (before flourishing)  and irrigation was done on 30 May, 15 June and 05 July 2011. During the vegetation the plants are protected from illnesses, harmful factors, etc. Insecticides used are Foksin (25kg/ha) and Mospillan (40gr/ha), while the fungicides : Ridomil MZ 42 (2kg/ha), Ridomil MZ 68 (2.5kg/ha).

Integration of Social Stakeholders
The farmers involved will be introduced to the latest techniques for the potato cultivation. The study visits in the potato fields will be organised in cooperation with the farmers. Experts of Agricultural Institute of Kosovo and Students will offer their knowledge to the farmers in such a way to have better and more qualitative products.
University Haxhi Zeka from Peja, aims to offer as much knowledge as possible from practice. Such visits will assist the student to familarize themselves with conditions of the national production. Likewise, the farm staff will have the opportunity to develop with the students those issues that are real in the region and beyond regarding the production of potatoes. Even the university teachers seem to benefit from such visits, never forgetting that the biggest profit is for the students and their involvement in practice work.
• It is common for every institution or company to have its own secrets, that is why it is necessary trust the students and the other party,
• Not to leak information out of the institution about the achieved results in the institution labs, and the experimental fields undertaken by bio-technological institution in Pejë. Everything should be discussed within the institutions and among the staff of the university faculties.
Learning Outcomes

Preparation Efforts Description
Students need to be lectured on the existing technologies of the potato cultivation. Set the time of the visit and also the meeting with the farmer. To follow all the process, step by step, a long period is needed by the students to take in all the information information on how the process works.
