Teaching sustainability to children(Resource ID: 353)

Often we speak about sustainability to people who have the experience and the knowledge to tell us what the sustainability is. Anyone, in the place I live, do not even think how important is to speak about sustainability to their children and how much this will affect their growth and improve their lives. There is no information in school books about sustainability, its importance and benefits.

In today's society where problems are found everywhere, in nature, in our district, in our neighbourhood, etc  sustainability is considered to be a critical point for the development and progress of today and future society. The solution to this problem I think is that it should start with the younger ones. Their awareness and preparation for the future will not only be an orientation on how they will work and develop themselves but will also be an orientation on how they will see the future. In our schools, where our children spend most of their time this information and activities relating to it are missing.

This material aims to sensitize and inform children about the term of sustainability. Usually, the children are attracted by different games, drawings, excursions in nature etc. Therefore this information will be given to them through these type of activities. Teaching sustainability to children means sustainability in itself. At the end of the activity the teacher can organize a puzzle game created by he/she that is related to the activity (in the additional material you will find an example created for this activity)

On the first day the children will be given the information on what sustainability is and why it is important to all of us. Through different games and drawings the children will understand what sustainability is. Cleaning the garden and the park of the school will be one of the activities on the first day and through this activity the children will learn about sustainability and will be encouraged to do something good to protect the environment and will feel appreciated by their schoolmates and others.

The second day will be held during the school holidays. The children will avoid using the computer, video games or television (the aim is: save the energy) and everyone will bring unwanted toys (make sure they are clean, safe and in good condition) and the kids swap toys with one another. In this way, the children go home with different toys, and nothing ends up in the landfill. The children will be satisfied because they have done something good for themselves and for the environment.

In the next activity the children will visit the recycling centre and Water Supply to see the activities in these centres. The speaker will explain to the kids the importance of recycling material and the water. Through drawing and colouring the kids will show the importance of the water and why it shouldn't be misused.

In other activities, beyond the games, the children will have the opportunity to create their Young Environmentalist Committee. In this way they can gather and perform activities for the future. To motivate the children “Young Environmentalist” certificates can be delivered.

Integration of Social Stakeholders
Elementary schools will be part of these activities. The teachers of ecology (a subject that is in curriculum of elementary schools) will be directly involved in all activities. As well as these activities, parents will be involved, along with the organizers and staff from the water supply centre will develop even more activities.
• Understanding the term sustainability
• Connection of the kids with the environment where they live.
• Economic difficulties - purchasing the materials and organizing the excursion
Learning Outcomes
The principal aim: teaching the children that sustainability is important and affects the lives of everyone.
Relevance for Sustainability
