Active Learning in Sustainable Economic Development(Resource ID: 355)

This module will explore the application of environmental and economic development planning, policy and management approaches to urban community development. Through an applied service learning approach, the module will require students to prepare a sustainable development plan for a community-based non-profit organization. Through this client-based planning project, students will have the opportunity to test how sustainable development concepts and different economic and environmental planning approaches can be applied to advance specific community goals within the constraints of a specific community. The project also emphasizes skills and issues involved in defining community goals, existing conditions analysis, and formulation of planning agendas.

The teaching resource will require 10 weeks.

This course requires the students to apply what they have learned or theoretically what they already know about Sustainable Economic Development. Therefore, this course will be oriented both in the development of theoretical knowledge and the practical application of the acquired knowledge. This course is designed as an interdisciplinary possibility bringing together other courses such as: Macroeconomics, Environmental Economics, Management, etc. On the other hand the case studies from this course can be applied as an input for other courses within the Faculty.

In order to achieve the course goals a set of different didactic materials will be available for the students such as: databases and software tools for the data analysis, video, presentations from specialists in the field, excursions and visits to make possible real recognition of the regional situations (PLEASE CONTACT THE AUTHOR OF THIS TEACHING RESOURCE FOR AVAILABLE DIDACTIC MATERIAL!). Students will be part of various organizations and support them in the events related to the sustainable development.

All this will help the students to analyze the different situations in the field with a critical eye, being involved specifically in the emerging realities and bringing possible solutions monitored by the community.

The datasets and experiences gained in the field will be presented at the annual conference organized by the students of the Faculty of Economics and their research will be published in the University review.

Integration of Social Stakeholders
Trans-disciplinary Case Study Approach realized through student projects in collaboration with stakeholders. Class time will be devoted to the projects through discussions, exercises, and presentation of work in progress. Approximately 25% of the class sessions will be used to introduce economic and sustainable development concepts, environmental and economic analysis tools, and policy and practice areas. Fieldwork will include site visits to the study area.

Learning Outcomes
Students will be encouraged to use the planning project and class discussions to explore how historic and existing social exclusion impact their work and reflect on insights gained about their individual work styles and the planning challenges that they faced.
