Lie to them once!(Resource ID: 27)

A round of introductions at the beginning of a seminar is not always effective. A fun technique is to include one lie in your introduction, for the audience to try and identify. This lie can be a simple exaggeration, or a complete falsification.

This method is ideal for groups who do not know each other particularly well. During the introductions, the participants should be asked to provide some information about themselves, and state their expectations for the course. One detail should not be true. The other students should guess what detail was wrong. Thus, not only will the introductions be made more attractive, the participants also immediately establish a link between the name, face and story of each other and remember the names of the participants in a more efficient way.

Didactical Description of the Method

Participants listen attentively to each other, because they will try to discover the lies in a playful and competitive nature. Since the memorization is easier when it is done via stories or pictures, the participants are offered an opportunity to attach a story to the names and personalities of their colleagues. Thus in addition at the beginning of a seminar (or a course or workshop) the ice between participants can be broken.

Topics of sustainability
Introductions, expectations and desires for a seminar/course/workshop and so on.
Strengths of the method
The participants remember the group members’ names faster. Participants must listen carefully, whilst trying to decode the facial expressions of participants, to guess what information is a lie.
Assessment / evaluation
An assessment is not provided, as this is merely the introduction round. Due to the rapid memorisation of the participants’ names, a good base between the participants can be created, which has a positive effect on the work during the seminar or workshop.
