Active learning in sustainable cultural and historical tourism in Albania(Resource ID: 346)

The learning material deals with sustainability in Albanian cultural heritage. It includes information about historical towns, institutions, buildings and points out the cultural distinctiveness. The teaching resource addresses the problems of historical and cultural tourism in Albania and the challenge to develop a sustainable approach in this area. The students have the possibility to discuss with employees of cultural institutions and historical sites, engage in real situations and work in groups to find the solutions. Also they can support the stakeholders in order to adopt a sustainable perspective to the tourism industry. The active participation of the students helps them to better prepare for collaborating and creating systemic solutions which are necessary for sustainable change.

The cultural and historical tourism in Albania refers to that kind of tourism where the tour group visits historical places and buildings, cultural institutions, paying attention to Albanians’ way of living, in order to understand their history, culture, traditions etc. Its purpose is not only to share and enjoy the arts, culture and tradition and visit historical places of the country with significant culture and heritage assets, but also it generates economic value. Thus, the historical and cultural tourism is an important industry to conserve and realise the value of Albanian heritage as well as a creator of jobs and investment.

The Albanian cultural and historical tourism faces a lack of experience in the field and it poses many problems toward developing a sustainable approach. The students will be divided into four groups and are required to visit the National History Museum in Tirana, the Museum of Ethnography in Kruja, the Museum of Archaeology in Durres, historical sites, like the Venetian Torra, the Amphitheatre in Durres, the castle of Kruja and the Old Bazaar, the castle of Petrala and the Tabak bridge in Tirana etc. with the purpose of making observations, gathering data and analysing information, and finally they are asked to write a fieldwork report giving solutions to real problems.

The students will present their projects in the presence of representatives from the cultural institutions and historical sites mentioned above in order to cooperate in finding better solutions to a sustainable change. Through participating in the observation, the students and the stakeholders can exchange ideas how to successfully retain distinctiveness of the historic towns and cities; how to manage the environment and climate change aimed at preserving the historical heritage and optimise the benefits of tourism.

Thus, the sustainable education in cultural and historical tourism in Albania, whose goal is to foster the collaboration between science and society, on the one hand emphasizes the importance of well-educated and motivated students, and on the other hand, the necessity to build bridges of communication between universities and stakeholders, such as museums, historical sites etc. Because the opportunity for mutual learning and cooperation between students and cultural institutions, help design a clear plan of action to inward investment and maximise the benefits and finally build a sustainable cultural and historical tourism industry.    

Integration of Social Stakeholders
National History Museum in Tirana, the Museums of Ethnography and Archaeology, historical sites, like the castles, the amphitheatre etc. are active partners in the seminar. Students have the possibility to get in direct contact with their employees, attend the activities of the cultural institutions, can observe aspects of acting and thinking in real situations, exchange ideas on specific questions and experience challenges in developing a sustainable approach to cultural and historical tourism.
Moreover, students can discuss different job opportunities. On the other hand, the stakeholders from the historical and cultural institutions benefit from the collaboration with the students generating new ideas and receiving external and creative perspectives on their activity and also recommendations about the sustainable management of the tourism industry.

Preparation Efforts
Preparation Efforts Description
- The preparation for the lecturer: 10 hours; the contact with cultural and historical institutions’ employees, who are interested in sharing their experience, cooperate with the students and develop a sustainable approach. The time scheduled for visits to cultural institutions and historical sites, group works, discussions, presentation of results and recommendations.
Formative assessment, such as: written reflections and in-class activities and summative assessment, such as student projects and presentations
Credit/Certification Description
A certification will be awarded to all participants for "Active learning in sustainable cultural and historical tourism in Albania".
